Oils on panel, 17½"x14", signed. Big, bold splashes of light and shadow, richly coloured roofs and refecting white walls draw our eyes through the shadows to the back of the painting.trees arch upwards, gracefully, leading us to the same spot and to the huge wheels of a cart parked in an open shed. It is easy to understand why the young Laura Johnson chose this man as her mentor when she first arrived in Staithes. For the rest of her life she was to lay out her palette in the way suggested by him.
