EDWARD ENOCH ANDERSON R.B.A. 1878 - 1961

Edward Anderson was one of the Staithes Group artists who was born in Ruswarp, near Whitby, one of eleven children, with three brothers and seven sisters. His father was originally a jet worker, but later became an art dealer and picture framer, owning two galleries, Rembrandt and West Cliff, which the Group were to utilise. His grandfather, Samuel Anderson, was a noted local archaeologist whowas particularly interested in excavating moorland barrows. Edward began painting at an early age, selling his first picture at the age of sixteen and going on to give sketching lessons a year later.

He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he studied between 1899 and 1904. He also lodged with a relative in Scarborough during some of this time. In 1905 he won first prize in a competition organized by Connoiseur magazine. In 1906 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and an Honorary Member of the North British Academy of Arts and Crafts in 1909, later becoming its Vice President. He was appointed Art Master at Halifax Grammar School in 1906. His teaching career continued, becoming second master at Ashton-under Lyme School of Art in 1907, Headmaster of Swindon School of Art in 1913 and from 1920 until his retirement in 1946 he was Principal of Winchester School of Arts and Crafts. He moved to Brighton when he retired.
