PAUL PAUL (Politachi) R.B.A. 1865 1937Paul Politachi was born into a Greek family in Constantinople. He moved to England while young and enrolled at Herkomers School in January 1987. It is likely that he met Rowland Hill while he was there and was introduced to Staithes through him.He painted chiefly in oils using small strokes of pure colour, very much in the manner of the French Impressionists.Whilst painting on the North Yorkshire coast during the peak of the Staithes Group, he was to spend most of his career based in London.He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1903 and of the Staithes Art Club in 1905. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Glasgow Institute, the Walker Gallery Liverpool and Birmingham and Manchester City Art Galleries. He has works in the collection of the City Art Gallery Sheffield and the Pannett Art Gallery Whitby. He exhibited at Birmingham City Art Gallery, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Goupil Gallery, the Walker Gallery Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Oil Painters.Bibliography:The Staithes Group, Peter Phillips, Phillips and Sons, Marlow1993The Dictionary of British Artists 1880 1940, J.
