On-Line Gallery | Staithes Group and Staithes Art Club Pictures | Common Misconceptions Regarding the Staithes Group
Any picture of Staithes - or even Whitby - might be by a member of the Group. Most definitely not!The group is defined as artists who painted in a plein-air (out-door Impressionist style) for sustained periods in the Parish of Hinderwell-cum-Roxby between 1890 and the start of the First World War. Most of these artists exhibited at the Staithes Art Club Exhibitions between 1901 and 1907. There is, however, some confusion over members of the Staithes Art Club and painters who worked in the artists' colony. All pictures by members of the Group are Staithes Group picturesNO! Many members of the group changed their styles greatly throughout careers that were often very long. MOST of Dame Laura Knight's pictures are not Staithes Group style at all. The same is true of her husband, Harold and many other members of the Group, Owen Bowen, Sydney Gardner and Frank Mason, being particularly striking examples. Artists whose earlier work was typically Victorian in style, rather than Staithes Group impressionism, include Gilbert Foster, Ralph Hedley, Fred Jackson and Robert Jobling. Laura and Harold Knight were the founder members of the Group. They were not!The Knights visited Staithes first in 1897, around a decade after the colony began to be formed. Barratt, Foster and Hedley were the first to start painting regularly in the area and encouraging other artists to come.Laura and Harold Knight first met in Staithes. They met in Nottingham where they both attended art school several years before they came to Staithes. It seems that Laura's mother came to some sort of agreement with Harold before her death that he should eventually marry Laura.Laura and Harold lived together in Staithes. As was normal at the time, they didn't live together until they were married in 1903. After their marriage they lodged in Roxby.Any picture signed is signed must be by the artist whose name it bears. No - and the following applies to all original pictures. Many signatures are very easy to copy - and this is particularly true of a number of Staithes Group artists
